Chapter History

The Supreme Council of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity granted six young men a charter for Theta Chapter at the University of Pennsylvania. We are eternally indebted to these six young men for their foresight. Our first brothers: Irving D. Rossheim, Philip Sterling, Isadore E. Sauder, Edward K. Lupin, Arthur Hyman and Eugene Bythiner.

Please help us construct a complete history of the Theta Chapter of ZBT at the University of Pennsylvania.  Many of the trophies, awards and historical documentation were lost or discarded when the house was converted to University Housing during a period when the Chapter was suspended from campus.  Much of our history was lost.  We need your help. Any information as to National Chapter awards, University Awards or other recognition that the Theta Chapter received would be greatly appreciated in rebuilding our history.  Pictures are also very welcome. As you can see, there are many blanks in the history.  Please help us to fill those voids. Email the webmaster with any information you might have.

March 20, 1957 Leonard S. Malmud takes over as Trustee from Victor Frank
1972 Small fire in attic, little damage
1974 Theta Chapter Awarded the Founders Cup
1980 ZBT National Award - George Macy Cup
1982 ZBT National Award - Meissner Cup - Most Improved
1983 75th Anniversary
1988 Theta Chapter was closed for 1 year by U. of Pa. For Rush infractions
1989 Theta Chapter reinstated to campus by University
1990 Lee Zimmerman takes over as Trustee
1994 ZBT National Award - National President Special Achievement Award
1998 ZBT National Award - Rush Excellence Less 10,000 Award
1999 ZBT National Award - Bijur Cup - Best Academic Achievement
1999 ZBT National Award - Barry D. Siegel Rushing Trophy
2000 ZBT National Award - Bijur Cup - Best Academic Achievement
2005 Theta Chapter was closed for 2 years by U. of Pa.
2007 Theta Chapter reinstated to campus by University on probation by National
Spring - 2007 Neal Abrams takes over as Trustee
November 1, 2008 Theta Chapter celebrated its 100th Anniversary - many thanks to John Levy and the dedicated brothers who put it together
April, 2010 Theta Chapter was again granted a full Charter by ZBT National
July 2010 ZBT National Award - Bijur Cup - Best Academic Achievement
July 2010 ZBT National recognition - 2nd Place in Athletic Achievement
